In 2024, while participating in WOC Dubai, we met and became friends with the Taiwanese exporter BlackGold, which works very closely with farmers in Costa Rica and Panama.
Later, we selected several lots from them, one of which was this wonderful coffee.
Chiriqui was the first region where European settlers planted coffee trees. The province remains one of Panama's main coffee-producing regions.
Today, there are three main coffee-growing regions: Boquete, Volcán, and Renacimiento. All three are located in the province of Chiriqui.
They are located around the country's three volcanoes: Baru, El Valle, and Le Yeguada. These regions have an exceptional microclimate: fertile volcanic soils are cooled by moderate breezes blowing from both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
When northern winds pass over the mountains, they create a thin fog called “bajareque.” It lowers the temperature around the coffee farms on the mountainside and slows down the ripening of the coffee berries. When the berries ripen more slowly, they accumulate more sugars and essential oils. This makes the coffee sweet, complex, and delicious.
Bocaté and Volcán are separated by the Barú volcano. Barú is an active stratovolcano that last erupted in the 16th century. It is believed that this eruption occurred about 450 years ago and covered the surrounding soil with tephra. As a result, today the soil in the areas surrounding the volcano is rich in nutrients and fertile. It is ideal for growing coffee.
Both regions have well-developed transport and processing infrastructure. This contributes to the production of high-quality products.
